Penn Medicine | Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Outpatient Therapy and researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have created the Strength After Breast Cancer program to help survivors rebuild strength and educate them about breast cancer-related conditions and side effects.
Strength After Breast Cancer is available to all breast cancer survivors who have completed their cancer treatments. Ask your oncology clinician and physical therapist if you are eligible. You may be a good candidate if:
- You want your strength and energy back
- You have questions about changes in your upper body caused by cancer treatment
- You want to learn more about lymphedema risk reduction and control
- You do things differently with your upper body than you did before your cancer
Because lymph nodes may be removed or damaged during surgery or radiation, lymphedema (swelling due to fluid buildup) is a common side effect of breast cancer treatment. Treatment can help you relieve symptoms, prevent complications, and improve your quality of life.
We specialize in providing expert lymphedema management across the entire Penn Medicine health system, ensuring you have access to specialized therapists and advanced treatments close to home.
Lymphedema Program at Princeton Rehabilitation
The Lymphedema Program at Princeton Rehabilitation, a program of the Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center, offers education and personalized care for managing your lymphedema.
Certified therapists provide one-on-one treatment, including gentle massage to drain fluid, exercises to improve movement, and compression therapy. They also use advanced tools like Deep Oscillation Therapy for improved lymphatic flow and a 3D measuring system to ensure a proper fit for compression garments.
Speak with your provider for more information or call 609-853-7840 to enroll.
We specialize in helping patients navigate the impact that breast cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy or hormone therapy, can have on future family planning. Because certain therapies can affect ovarian function, we prioritize early intervention to ensure you understand your options and can take proactive steps before beginning treatment.
Our breast cancer team works in close coordination with our fertility preservation team to ensure that fertility discussions happen quickly—often within 24 to 48 hours of a cancer diagnosis—to avoid any delays in your oncology treatment plan.
If you’re a breast cancer survivor or an at-risk patient, maintaining routine follow-up care and prevention is essential.
Launched in July 2025, Penn Medicine’s new 34-foot mobile mammography van brings high-quality, state-of-the-art 3D breast cancer screenings directly to communities throughout the Philadelphia region. This climate-controlled unit is designed to eliminate transportation barriers by providing year-round, on-site services that match the technological standards of hospital-based equipment.
While insurance is accepted, no patient is excluded due to a lack of coverage, ensuring that accessible and comfortable preventative care is available to everyone in the community.
Specific mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes can significantly increase the lifetime risk for breast, ovarian, pancreatic, and prostate cancers. For current breast cancer patients and survivors, understanding genetic risk is a vital component of long-term health management and family planning.
Cancer genetics specialists at Penn Medicine and the Basser Center for BRCA provide specialized genetic counseling and clinical care for hereditary cancer conditions. The Basser Center is the first comprehensive facility of its kind, focusing on cutting-edge research and prevention strategies to manage these risks and improve patient outcomes.
