Compassionate support from weight loss experts at Penn Medicine

Achieving your weight loss goal requires more than a physical commitment to a healthier life. Changing your diet and lifestyle also impacts your mind and spirit. The bariatric surgery and weight management team at Penn Medicine offers services to help support and sustain your weight loss including social support, nutrition, and fitness. Our team includes surgeons, obesity medicine doctors, nutritionists, psychologists, physicians, and exercise physiologists—all with expertise in treating obesity.

Pre-operative education

Weight loss surgery is a big decision. Our team has helped thousands of people take their first step to better health. We guide you through all your options and answer any questions about your bariatric procedure and the impact it will have on your life.

Support groups

Support is key on your journey to better health. Our ongoing bariatric surgery support groups offer both emotional support and motivation by connecting you with fellow patients in the Penn Medicine bariatric community. Whether you are considering or have already had bariatric surgery, these support groups offer an opportunity to share experiences and receive support. The format for support groups (virtual, in-person, or both) varies by each program location:

Mental health counseling

Bariatric surgery changes the way you think about food. Our trained mental health professionals offer specialized support to help you before and after your procedure. They guide you through behavioral changes you need to maintain a healthy weight and offer tools to navigate the emotional impact of surgery.

Nutrition and active lifestyle support

Life after bariatric surgery includes diet, nutrition, and lifestyle changes that are crucial for long-term success. Our registered licensed dietitians provide knowledgeable nutritional support to people with special health conditions, including those recovering from bariatric surgery. They’ll create an individualized nutrition plan that helps you gradually improve your eating habits and lifestyle. They also offer guidance on physical activity, portion control, and balanced meals to help you meet your goals.

Lifelong follow-up care: the key to ongoing weight management

Your weight loss journey doesn’t end after surgery. Follow-up care helps prevent weight gain, nutrition deficiencies, and helps to keep you motivated after bariatric surgery.

At Penn Medicine, we’re experts at delivering all the post-surgical care, support, and resources you need for life. We encourage every patient to follow up with our team at least once a year and we’re always here if you need additional care or support.
