What symptoms can chordomas cause?
Most chordomas grow slowly, so they often don’t cause symptoms right away. If you do develop symptoms, they may vary depending on the tumor’s size and where it forms.
When the tumor develops at the base of your skull, your symptoms may include:
- Headaches
- Swallowing problems
- Vision changes
If a chordoma grows somewhere on the section of your spine that moves, known as your mobile spine, you may experience:
- Pain near the tumor
- Nerve compression, which can cause pain, weakness, numbness, tingling in the arms or legs, or loss of coordination
A chordoma can grow at the fixed, bottom parts of your spine—the large triangular bone called the sacrum or your tailbone (coccyx). This may lead to:
- Numbness in the groin
- Bowel and bladder changes
- Tingling, numbness, and weakness in the legs
