A Message From the Director of Nursing

Michael Becker, RN, MSN, CCRN
Michael Becker, RN, MSN, CCRN
Associate Executive Hospital Director, Chief Nursing Officer

I chose to become a registered nurse because I wanted a career that would provide me with a challenge on a daily basis. To find the right place to practice took a little more searching. I chose Penn Presbyterian because of its distinguished nursing history, its ongoing commitment to expanding the professional role of nurses, and its mission to provide the highest quality patient care.

Founded in 1871, Penn Presbyterian started training nurses in 1889. Since those early times, the hospital has sought individuals dedicated to the nursing profession, nurses who can be counted on to always put the patient's interests first, regardless of the circumstances.

In return for their commitment and hard work, Penn Presbyterian has created a culture that listens to its nurses. There is key in making patient care decisions, establishing operational procedures, and developing hospital policy. Nurses are empowered to participate in practice and unit decisions through the Shared Governance Council model. Physicians are vocal here about the value of nursing care, and they serve as nurses' advocates.

In addition, Penn Presbyterian's Administration recognizes both the personal and professional needs of nurses, offering a flexible work environment and opportunities for advancement. Over the years, I've known many nurses, who have left Penn Presbyterian, only to return. One of them said to me recently, "Nowhere else is the commitment to nurses more real that at Penn Presbyterian. I truly feel good about the care I provide."

Penn Presbyterian offers the programs and services of a tertiary care hospital, within a community hospital setting. Here the high-tech world of advanced medical/surgical procedures, such as robotic-assisted surgery, meets the friendly surroundings of a medium-sized hospital, whose staff makes it a point to go “above and beyond” to meet patients' needs.

It's no wonder that I chose Penn Presbyterian. Patients here are treated like family members. And it is the nurses who make the difference. At Penn Presbyterian, we are proud of all of them. In fact, we believe our nurses are simply the best. I hope you choose to practice at Penn Presbyterian. You, too, will make a difference and will become part of our family.

Sincerely,

Michael Becker, RN, MSN, CCRN
Associate Executive Hospital Director/Chief Nursing Officer
