About the Department of Ophthalmology

Our Mission

The Penn Ophthalmology Department offers individualized care across 17 ophthalmic sub-specialties and has one of the largest teams of eye care specialists in the United States. Ophthalmology faculty and staff are committed to translating the latest research into the most up-to-date treatment approaches, collaborating across the university and hospital system, mentoring and teaching the next generation of clinician scientists, and partnering with the community to address unmet eye care needs in Philadelphia. 

Penn Medicine’s Department of Ophthalmology, Scheie Eye Institute, is dedicated to excellence in clinical care, research, and teaching. We offer complete diagnostic and treatment services in comprehensive ophthalmology, as well as all subspecialty areas. Services range from routine eye examinations to the most advanced ocular surgery.

• In the last fiscal year, Penn ophthalmologists had 130,331 patient visits.

• Penn consistently ranks among the top five recipients of National Eye Institute funding.
• In the last fiscal year, ophthalmology faculty had 185 publications and an H-Index of 122.
• The Department is currently conducting more than 100 clinical trials.

Teaching

• The Penn Ophthalmology Department provides teaching and mentoring for students at every phase of their careers, from high school to specialized fellowships and post-doctoral training.
• All Penn Ophthalmology residents pursue top fellowships programs.
• The Penn Ophthalmology residency program is ranked top 10 in the nation for research output per alumnus.
