Updated June 2, 2020

BlueJeans is a HIPAA-compliant platform used by Penn Medicine care teams to conduct video visits with patients. BlueJeans has security features, including a room lock so that communications within the platform are private and your information stays safe.

Install and test the BlueJeans app

The Day Before Your Call

  1. Make sure you are using a mobile device running Android version 6.0 or later that has a working camera.
  2. Make sure you have a strong Wi-Fi or cellular data connection.
  3. Get BlueJeans for Android from the Google Play Store and install on your device. Open the app after it is installed

  4. When prompted, please allow the app to access photos, media, and files on your device. Choose “Join a Meeting or Event” to continue setting up and testing the app. (You do NOT need to create an account in order to use the app.)

  5. Enter the meeting ID “111”, then choose App Audio & Video.

Important: This meeting ID is only for testing. You will receive a unique meeting ID for your visit a few minutes before your appointment.

  6. Enter a name that you would like as your display name that is shown to others when you are on a video call.
  7. Since this is the first time using the app, you will be asked for permission to use your camera, phone, and microphone. Make sure these are all allowed. Set “Remember for all meetings” to “On” for the app to remember these settings. Tap on “Join Meeting”

  8. When joining a meeting, you will be asked to allow BlueJeans to take pictures and record video, make and manage phone calls, and record audio. Select “allow” to be able to participate in the appointment.

  9. The test meeting will now start. Once connected you should be able to hear your voice repeat back to you, and see a small video of yourself in the top-right corner of the app screen. If that is the case, then the BlueJeans app has been successfully installed and ready for your upcoming video appointment.

  10. If not, make sure the camera and microphone buttons are white and NOT red. If either one is red, then click them to unmute your audio and turn on your video.

If the app is not working correctly and you need assistance you can contact the practice directly for immediate assistance.

Using BlueJeans for Your Appointment

  1. Make sure you are using the mobile device on which you have installed and tested the BlueJeans app for Android.
  2. Make sure you have a strong Wi-Fi or cellular data connection.
  3. You will receive a message containing a BlueJeans link from the office a few minutes before your appointment. Tap on the link or Join Meeting button to join your call.

If you have not received the link by the scheduled time of your call, please call your provider’s office.

If you see a pop-up prompting to open the meeting in BlueJeans or a browser select “BlueJeans” then “Always” to skip this step in the future.

  4. Select “App Audio & Video” to join. If you do not have a good internet connection and need to have a phone call instead, please contact your provider’s office.

  5. If you have already set your display name and meeting preferences while installing and testing the app, your appointment will start. If you have not already done so, you will be prompted to set your display name and meeting preferences before your appointment can begin.

  6. Before your appointment, you’ll wait in the virtual waiting room. When you enter the room, at the top of the screen, make sure the camera and microphone buttons are clear (as below) and NOT red. If either one is red, then click on each of them to unmute your audio and turn on your video.

  7. You will be placed in the meeting and your provider will join when ready.
  8. If your provider is with another patient when you connect, you will receive the below message. Please try again in 1-2 minutes. When the care team provider is ready, you will join the meeting.
