Description of Research Expertise:
My area of interest has been cervical function in pregnancy and recurrent pregnancy loss.
In the 1980's, I was one of the first to describe the use of transvaginal ultrasound of the cervix to objectively assess the cervix in pregnancy.
I have developed different cerclage techniques and studied and published in the area of mangement of pregnancies complicated by cervical insufficiency and uterine anomalies.
My clinical group started to use pessaries for management of patients with short cervix in gestation, and currently we are involved in randomized studies to assess the value of the pessary in prematurity prevention.
Over the last five years I have established a network of researchers in Latin America to study hypertensive disease in pregnancy. This collaboration resulted in a major study to determine the best way of management of severe preeclampsia remote from term. This study was recently published in the Am J Obstet Gyencol Nov. 2013, receiving the editor's choice recognition accompanied by an editorial and discussion.
