Penn’s Second Annual 5K for theIOA and Memory Mile
 

Mark your calendars for Penn’sSecond Annual 5K for the IOA and Memory Mile Walk on Sunday, September22. This year, the event will start at Shoemaker Green, between the Palestraand Franklin Field, and run through Penn Park. Medals will be awarded to thetop male and female runners in several age groups. The 5K Run will begin at8:00 am; the Memory Mile Walk at 8:10 am. Free parking at the PerelmanCenter for Advanced Medicine and post-race refreshments will be provided.

Proceeds will help further researchby Penn’s Institute on Agingfor the treatment and care of patients with Alzheimer’s, neurodegenerative andother age-related diseases. Last year’s race proceeds supported two pilotprojects for young investigators “in novel areas which might not otherwise befunded, to potentially identify new opportunities for understanding thediseases and identifying new therapies,” said PJ Brennan, MD, senior VPand chief medical officer of UPHS.

2013 MSCity to Shore Cycling on September 28 and 29

This year marks the33rd anniversary of the Bike MS City to Shore Ride, in which Team UPHS/Penn,will, with your help, again be the largest team! We’re counting on new andveteran cyclists to keep the momentum going strong and join the team thisSeptember 28 – 29, for an even more successful year.  The Team is working with Gary Scheib, UPHSchief operating officer, HUP executive director and the team founder, to set asystem-wide goal again of recruiting 300 team members and raising $150,000 thisyear.

As always, there istruly an option for everyone:  you canchoose to participate as a cyclist, a virtual cyclist (if you can’t ride, butwant to fundraise), or a volunteer at the team’s Finish Line tent. Register by July26, and receive a free Team UPHS/Penn jersey.

Thanks to you, the2012 team of 318 members raised an amazing $158,385 and qualified for thehighly-coveted finish line tent and won five awards: Largest Overall Team,Largest Corporate Team, Top Fund Raising Team, $100,000 Club, and MillenniumCircle Team.

Penn Presbyterian’s Cultural Diversity Committee invites you to attend thefourth annual Cultural Diversity Conference. This year’s event will focus ontopics related to health literacy. The morning session will feature a keynoteaddress by Victoria Rich, PhD, RN, FAAN, chief nurse executive, andrecipient of the American Organization of Nurse Executives’ 2013 Prism DiversityAward. The afternoon session will include a two-hour hands-on workshop onimproving communication between healthcare providers and patients with lowhealth literacy, led by Aracely Rosales, chief content expert and multilingualdirector at Health Literacy Innovations. Walkalongside the Penn Medicine community, American Heart Association (AHA)and people of all ages from the Philadelphia area at the 2013 PhiladelphiaHeart Walk and support the fight against heart disease and stroke!

PennMedicine will once again support the American Heart Association’s PhiladelphiaHeart Walk, held on Saturday, November 9, 2013, at Citizens Bank Park. Thisyear, for the 15th Annual Heart Walk, the Penn Medicinechallenge is to raise $135,000 and recruit more employees, patients, friendsand families to walk with us than ever before.

Byparticipating in the Heart Walk, you will help fund groundbreaking research todevelop new therapies and better treatment options for cardiovascular diseaseand stroke
