Having a compelling vision and a strategic plan to get there is critical for all businesses and not-for-profit organizations. It ensures that the work of the organization is aligned with its desired future state and will lead to long-term success.

Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health has been engaged in strategic planning for decades, and I am pleased to share that we recently finalized our plan for fiscal years 2021 to 2025.

This plan provides a shared sense of direction and a framework for alignment across the health system. It also will help us identify priorities for each of the five years, including which activities and initiatives will require investment of our resources. Lastly, it will help us define what success will look like.

LG Health’s leadership team began work on our new strategic plan last summer. We developed the plan with input and support from clinical and administrative leaders, as well as our Board of Trustees and our colleagues throughout Penn Medicine.

Just as LG Health’s mission, vision and values guide our everyday work, they also serve as the foundation for our strategic plan.

The plan identifies our four key focus areas for the next five years:

STRATEGIC GROWTH AND SUSTAINABILITY: We will diversify service delivery, increase market share and sustain LG Health as the essential health-care resource in the communities and populations we seek to serve.

CONSUMERISM: We will continuously build consumer preference through clear understanding of diverse expectations, proactive delivery of meaningful value and provision of an extraordinary experience through every touchpoint with our health system.

HIGH RELIABILITY: We will demonstrate an unwavering commitment to the well-being of consumers, patients and staff by consistently delivering high-quality, safe, efficient, effective and equitable processes and outcomes.

COMMUNITY COMMITMENT: We will serve as an essential community asset and leader every day by improving the lives, health and well-being of the communities we serve.

Each of these four focus areas includes several objectives, which provide additional details on what we hope to accomplish. The plan also identifies innovation and workforce (called “enablers” in the plan) as two major contributing factors to our success.

We will share greater details on each focus area, as well as the metrics we will use to evaluate our performance, in the coming months.
