Laura Lombardo and Poppy Bass with some of the hundreds of socks collected for the homeless.

Socks with skid-resistant rubber treads are an important part of keeping HUP’s inpatients -- and those undergoing some outpatient procedures -- safe. But, sadly, when the patient leaves, the socks are generally left behind – and thrown out.

But Save Our Sox is changing that scenario. The new initiative at HUP is repurposing the socks for those who regularly battle the outside elements to stay warm and dry – the homeless.

Poppy Bass of Information Services leads what has become a very successful effort since kicking off in March. Working with Laura Lombardo of Community Relations, and Victor Jordan of Materials Management, more than 1,900 pairs of used non-slip socks have been cleaned, matched, and donated to charitable organizations around the city who help the homeless.
