Rhinoplasty, surgery to reshape the nose, is one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures.

What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, surgery to reshape the nose, is one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures.

There are two main types of rhinoplasty:

  • Open rhinoplasty is when the doctor makes small incisions at the base of the nose.
  • Closed rhinoplasty is when the surgeon performs the surgery from the inside of the nose.

Depending on the changes desired, the type of surgery will vary.

Who is a Good Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

Many individuals are viable candidates for rhinoplasty. The best candidates have realistic expectations about what the surgery can accomplish. Rhinoplasty can alter the shape, size, and overall appearance of your nose. The results can range from drastic to minor and create a more aesthetically pleasing look.

Additionally, rhinoplasty may improve breathing in those patients with breathing problems related to the internal structure of their nose. In some cases, insurance companies will pay for this portion of the surgery but not the cosmetic part.

What to Expect With Rhinoplasty

If you smoke, you must stop smoking one to two weeks before the procedure. Certain medications and supplements may also need to be discontinued.

Recovering After Rhinoplasty

Even though most rhinoplasty procedures are done in an outpatient setting, anesthesia is given so you will need to arrange for transportation home. Some patients have additional surgeries at the same time that require an overnight stay.

Each person heals differently, but most people need one to two weeks to recover from rhinoplasty. You will be given specific instructions to follow during recovery including how to care for the surgical site, medications to apply or take orally to aid healing and reduce the potential for infection, and specific concerns to look for.

Bruising around the eyes and cheeks for one to three weeks is common. You will be advised on when to return to work, regular exercise and other activities.

It may take a full year before the complete results of your nose surgery are realized but the vast majority of patients are satisfied with the results.

Risks and Outcomes of Rhinoplasty

Every type of surgery has risks. You can help prevent complications by carefully following all pre- and post-surgery instructions. Our plastic surgeons will review all the potential risks and side effects with you.

The techniques used for rhinoplasty minimize the risk of scarring. Any scars from closed rhinoplasty will be hidden inside the nose. Scars from open rhinoplasty will be small and difficult to see.

Occasionally, small red spots, which are tiny broken blood vessels, appear on the nose after surgery. These spots occur unpredictably, and, while they're minor, are permanent. Sometimes, even in the hands of an experienced surgeon, patients choose a minor revision after surgery to complete the alteration.
