Are there pre-requisites for the taking teacher training programs?

The pre-requisites for the Practicum, which is consider just the first step in teacher training, are:

  • Previous completion of an 8-week foundation Mindfulness-based Stress. Management (MBSM) or Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course (does not need to be completed with Penn).
  • Optimally, one full year of regular, personal mindfulness practice (5-7 days per week) after the completion of the 8-week MBSM program.
  • Participation in a 5-day silent teacher-led mindfulness retreat (does not have to have been completed with Penn)

Exceptions are sometimes made, determined on a case-by-case basis.  However, priority will be given to applicants who have completed all pre-requisites.

Can I take the 8-week foundation Mindfulness-based Stress Management course concurrently with the Practicum?

The 8-week foundation Mindfulness-based Stress Management course must be taken prior to taking the Practicum and cannot be done at the same time. In fact, our program requires that individuals interested in teacher training, wait a full year after completing the foundation course before applying for the Practicum. Additionally, it is assumed that a potential Practicum applicant maintain a regular, personal mindfulness practice (5-7 days a week) during that year.

I have been practicing other types of meditation for many years but haven’t had any formal training. Do I qualify for any of the teacher training programs?

To qualify for the Practicum, you must have completed an 8-week foundation Mindfulness-based Stress Management course either with Penn or another organization. Because the Practicum is focused specifically on learning how to teach the mindfulness-based stress management, it is necessary for you to have experienced that course. In rare instances, exceptions are made on a case-by-case basis, but priority will be given to applicants who meet all of the pre-requisites.

Where and when are the teacher training programs held?

All teacher training programs are held in and around the University City area of Philadelphia. The primary locations are the Ralston Center (3615 Chestnut), International House (3701 Chestnut) and our administrative offices (3930 Chestnut).  We usually offer the Practicum one to two times per year in the Fall and Spring, which is dependent upon having enough qualified applicants. The program meets for ten (10) Saturdays for a full day from 9:30 am  to 4:00 pm and there is an all-day retreat between weeks 6 and 7 that is also part of the program. We post the Practicum schedules as early as possible so that you can adjust your schedule to allow you to attend all 10 sessions plus the retreat which is a requirement of this program.
