Bicuspid aortic valve, Aortic valve replacement

Kevin was born with a bicuspid aortic valve, which means that instead of three leaflets in his heart's aortic valve, Kevin was born with just two. This congenital heart defect left his heart unable to pump blood adequately through his body. At 13 years old, Kevin had heart surgery to replace his aortic valve with a new one.

At 45 years old, his initial valve replacement stopped working well enough, and he started to experience shortness of breath. Kevin's cardiologist recommended he go see a cardiac surgeon at Penn Medicine.
