Cranial base tumors are some of the most challenging, complex and technically demanding tumors to treat. The Center for Cranial Base Surgery at Penn Medicine is the Philadelphia region's premier center for the evaluation and treatment of tumors of the head, neck and face, as well as other complex cranial base disorders.

A Multidisciplinary Approach to Cranial Base Surgery

Because many cranial base disorders are complex, the Penn Center for Cranial Base Surgery uses a multidisciplinary approach that combines the expertise of Penn specialists from several clinical areas. Together, they collaborate and determine an individualized treatment plan specifically designed for each patient.

Physicians from neurosurgery, Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT), medical oncology, endocrinology, neuroradiology, radiation oncology, and plastic and reconstructive surgery, meet at a biweekly cranial base tumor conference to discuss every case and design a treatment plan.

In addition, patients receive additional support from experienced physical and occupational therapists, speech and swallowing therapists, rehabilitation medicine physicians, social workers, endocrinologists, neuro-ophthalmologists and dietitians.

Penn otorhinolaryngologists also work in conjunction with the Penn Brain Tumor Center, which is nationally recognized for innovative, cutting-edge, therapy of benign and malignant tumors originating in the brain, as well as metastatic cancer that originates outside of the brain.

Penn Medicine is a pioneer in the development of innovative and minimally invasive surgical procedures and state-of-the-art imaging. With the advent of these procedures, many of these tumors, previously inoperable, can now be successfully treated.
