Advancing Heart Disease Treatments Through Research and Scientific Discoveries

By learning more about what causes cardiovascular disease, Penn scientists and clinicians are discovering new therapies for heart disease.

Heart Disease Research at Penn Medicine

Penn CVI has four goals:

  • Promote transformational discoveries in cardiovascular science and cardiovascular medicine.
  • Translate scientific discoveries into innovative methods to diagnose, treat and ultimately how to cure cardiovascular disease, as well as ways to prevent cardiovascular disease.
  • Encourage cardiovascular education in physicians, students and the general community.
  • Create a culture within the University of Pennsylvania and Penn Medicine where patient care, research and education within the broad area of cardiovascular biology and medicine are seamlessly integrated.

Cardiovascular Fellowships and Continuing Cardiovascular Education

Penn CVI faculty members direct the following cardiology fellowship training programs:

  • General cardiology fellowship
  • Cardiac electrophysiology fellowship
  • Interventional cardiology fellowship
  • Heart failure fellowship
  • Cardiothoracic surgery fellowship
  • Vascular surgery fellowship

Each Penn cardiology fellowship program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

In addition, CVI faculty members direct multiple cardiovascular CME courses focused on multiple topics relevant to cardiovascular medicine and cardiothoracic surgery. CVI faculty members also present lectures on cardiovascular health and disease to the community at outpatient satellite practices including Penn Medicine Radnor and Penn Medicine Valley Forge.
