Our surgeons and teams perform lung transplants for patients with advanced lung diseases. Here, we feature our researchers and their current research projects.
Vivek Ahya, MD is the medical director of the lung transplantation program at the Penn Transplant Institute. Our surgeons and teams perform lung transplants for patients with advanced lung diseases such as emphysema and cystic fibrosis. To date, nearly 800 successful lung transplants have been performed at the institute.
Below are some of our researchers, and their clinical and translational projects currently active and funded by NIH and industry grants.
- NIH Clinical Trials in Organ Transplant Consortium Grant: Predictors of post-transplant lung injury using biochemical and genetic markers, specifically focusing on anti-oxidant and inflammatory gene expression
- A multi-centered cohort study to investigate the etiology and pathogenesis of acute lung injury following lung transplantation
- Clinical trials of novel immunosuppressive agents for the prevention and treatment of acute and chronic lung rejection
- Mechanisms of chronic lung transplant rejection
