C. William Hanson III, MDThe Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at Penn has a long and storied history, and I am privileged to serve as an interim chair while we search for a permanent chair to succeed Lee Fleisher. Lee has had an extraordinary career at Penn Medicine, presiding over a significant expansion in our clinical footprint, faculty size, research funding, resident, and fellow and faculty recruitment, educational contributions to the School, and presence both within the Health System and across the world. My focus as interim chair will be to continue Lee’s momentum, maintain stability during a time of several other transitions and challenges, such as our large role in pandemic preparedness, our continuing emphasis on diversity and inclusion, and our expansion into the New Patient Pavilion. I am enormously grateful for the terrific faculty, trainees, nurses and staff that will enable the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care to retain its prominent international reputation.

C. William Hanson III, MD
Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care, Surgery, and Internal Medicine,
Chief Medical Information Officer and Vice President of the University of Pennsylvania Health System
