Lung
After Lung Transplant
Lung transplant recipients usually remain in the intensive care unit (ICU) for three to five days following surgery before moving to the heart and lung surgical floor. On average, lung transplant patients stay in the hospital for two to three weeks following surgery. Typically, there is very little difference in recovery time between bilateral and single-lung transplant recipients.
Follow-up care
Patients are expected to return to Penn Transplant Institute three times a week for 12 weeks following surgery, for ongoing therapy and medical care. Patients are enrolled in Penn’s outpatient pulmonary rehab program which includes pulmonary conditioning and physical therapy. Once a week, patients are seen by their pulmonologist and/or nurse practitioner to monitor for any signs of infection, rejection or medication side effects.
