  • Produce bile, which is necessary for the absorption of fats and vitamins.
  • Manufacture important proteins that are necessary for blood clotting and muscle building.

The Penn Transplant Institute provides comprehensive medical and surgical care for patients with end-stage liver disease requiring liver transplantation. In total, more than 1,500 liver transplants have been performed at Penn.
