Living Donor Liver Surgery

On the day of the procedure, the donor is admitted to the hospital early in the morning – usually two to three hours before the recipient. The donor operation takes from six to eight hours. This is longer than a traditional liver transplant procedure because two operations must be coordinated.

Once the surgery begins, the liver and the bile ducts of the donor are inspected and the gallbladder is removed. If the liver segment or blood vessels do not appear to be appropriate for donation, the procedure may be stopped at this time. If everything is in order, the recipient is brought to the operating room. Once the recipient's diseased liver is taken out, the donor's liver segment is removed and inserted into the recipient.

Donor surgery costs

The donor’s evaluation and hospitalization costs are covered completely by the recipient’s Medicare and/or insurance. The donor is not responsible for any medical expenses, but is not reimbursed for lost income, transportation costs or personal expenses.
