Living Donor Liver Evaluation
In order to qualify as a living donor, an individual must be:
- Physically fit.
- In good general health.
- Free of alcohol and tobacco use.
- Between 21 and 50 years old.
- A family member, friend or acquaintance of the recipient.
- Gender and ethnicity are not considered in determining a successful match.
Potential donors undergo extensive testing to determine if they are able to become a living donor. These tests include:
- Consultation with a transplant surgeon, hepatologist, cardiologist, social worker and psychiatrist.
- Physical examination and review of medical history.
- Meeting with an independent donor advocate.
- Blood typing and tests.
- Electrocardiogram and echocardiogram.
- Urine studies.
- Chest X-ray.
- Liver imaging – such as an MRI or CT scan – to determine liver size and to look for abnormalities.
- Angiogram of liver blood vessels.
- Liver biopsy.
- Routine health screening procedures such as a mammogram or colonoscopy.
