Living Kidney Donor Surgery
Depending on the patient’s anatomy, Penn transplant surgeons perform one of two types of surgery:
- Laparoscopic surgery (also called laparoscopic nephrectomy)
- Open surgery (also called open nephrectomy)
Donor surgery costs
The donor’s evaluation and hospitalization costs are covered completely by the recipient’s Medicare and/or insurance. The donor is not responsible for any medical expenses, but is not reimbursed for lost income, transportation costs or personal expenses.
