Thymic Disease

As one of the world’s most experienced centers for the treatment of thymic disease, Penn’s thoracic surgeons have performed over 200 successful transcervical thymectomies. This procedure allows complete removal of the thymus through a small neck incision rather than the traditional, large median sternotomy that divides the breastbone. There are few centers in the world that perform this procedure, and Penn has the second largest published series of these cases.

Thymectomy is often indicated in myasthenia gravis patients as it promotes remission from the muscle weakness that characterizes this disease. Thymoma may occur with or without myasthenia gravis, and Penn surgeons have broad experiences in both sorts of cases.
