Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer in which malignant cells are found in the sac lining the chest (the pleura).

Among the nation’s most experienced non-cardiac thoracic surgeons, Penn thoracic surgeons offer a number of standard surgical treatments for this disease including pleurodesis, pleurectomies and extrapleural pneumonectomies.

However, our experience allows us to move beyond standard treatment, if necessary, and provide new, experimental treatments such as the surgical placement of gene therapy agents into the pleural space or the addition of photodynamic therapy to your surgical procedure.

Treatment Designed for You
We’ll discuss your case during our weekly multidisciplinary conference, in which some of the nation’s leading surgeons, oncologists, radiation oncologists, and other health care practitioners will sit down together, review your medical history, assess your needs and develop a treatment program tailored specifically to you.

A Team Approach
As surgeons and as doctors, we’re committed to not only providing you with the surgical technique that best meets your needs but also combining surgery with other multidisciplinary forms of treatment that will offer you the best possible quality of life. As such, your treatment may be combined with chemotherapy, radiation, photodynamic therapy, or other forms of treatment.
