Research Protocols Promote Advanced Patient
Care
Penn Presbyterian Medical Center’s Thoracic
Surgery Research Laboratory investigates new treatment
approaches that are immediately applicable to
patient care or will move into the clinical setting
within several years. We focus on innovative pursuits
and are particularly interested in targeting problems
for which no effective solution currently exists.
Our research programs include:
Lung Cancer
- Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) for locally advanced
lung cancer
Mesothelioma
- Chemo (Alimta) radiation/surgery trial
- PDT
- PDT/vaccine research with Roswell Park
Non-cancer lung diseases
- Development of an artificial lung for reversible
lung disease
- Non-surgical lung volume reduction “surgery”
for emphysema
- PDT for fungal infections in the lung and
other inaccessible locations
- Development of a system to identify areas
of the lung that leak air at the time of surgery
- Development of a system to seal injured lungs
that leak air
- Development of a technique for studying ultrasound
blood flow measurements to identify potential
clots that might travel to the lung
Our PDT program continues to expand beyond pulmonary,
pleural and esophageal applications, and we are
in the process of establishing a comprehensive
multidisciplinary PDT center.
