Thoracic Surgery at Pennsylvania Hospital
The Thoracic Surgery Program at Pennsylvania
Hospital draws upon the resources of Penn’s
sophisticated academic medical center expertise.
Patients are seen as outpatients at the Hospital
of the University of Pennsylvania and may choose
to have their surgery at Pennsylvania Hospital
or the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
A multidisciplinary team of Pennsylvania Hospital
physicians convenes weekly to discuss each patient’s
optimal treatment plan.
Specialty Services
Our program offers surgical management for malignant
and non-malignant conditions affecting the lung,
esophagus, thymus, mediastinum, chest wall and
diaphragm.
Malignant disease:
- Surgical resection for lung, esophageal,
thymic and other chest malignancies
- Video-assisted thoracic surgical (VATS) lobectomy
for lung cancer
- Specialized treatment and protocols for patients
with advanced lung cancer including aggressive,
lungsparing operations for cases often deemed
inoperable at other institutions
- Resection of sarcoma metastatic to the lungs
- Multi-modality treatment for patients with
lung cancer, esophageal cancer (including transhiatal
esophagectomy and video-assisted esophagectomy)
and mesothelioma
- Surgical and medical management of lung metastases
Non-malignant disease:
At Penn, many of these procedures can be performed
using a minimally invasive approach.
- Thymoma resections and transcervical thymectomy
for myasthenia gravis (performed at only a few
centers nationwide)
- VATS resection of mediastinal cysts and posterior
mediastinal neurogenic tumors
Research Protocols to Advance Patient Care
Standards
We provide access to virtually all clinical trials
via national cooperative groups dedicated to studying
the treatment of thoracic disease. Among other
trials, we have been particularly active in significant
thoracic surgery trials sponsored by the American
College of Surgeons Oncology Group.
