Thoracic Surgery Services at Penn
Surgeons in the Division of Thoracic Surgery
are skilled in a variety of specialized techniques
including procedures that range from lung transplant
to tracheal surgery. In 2003 and 2004, surgeons
in the Division performed more than 1,000 major
thoracic procedures – the most
active program in the Philadelphia region. Penn remains the
only center in the region with an entire group
of cardiothoracic surgeons dedicated to the non-cardiac
side of the specialty.
Penn thoracic surgeons believe strongly that multidisciplinary care leads to
optimal results. A team of specialists review patients and communicate closely
with the patient’s primary and referring physicians. The Division offers
a comprehensive range of services for malignant and non-malignant conditions
affecting the lung, esophagus, mediastinum (including the thymus), chest wall,
diaphragm and sympathetic chain.
Penn thoracic surgeons perform nearly four times
as many lung transplants as any other hospital
in the Philadelphia region. In the area of chest,
lung, and artificial breathing operations, Penn
surgeons do nearly twice as many procedures as
other area hospitals. Our experience enables

Penn's thoracic surgeons are notable for several
reasons:
- Four thoracic surgeons were recognized in Philadelphia Magazine's 2007 Top Docs issue.
- One of our thoracic surgeons was honored in The Best Doctors in America 2005-2006.
- One of our surgeons was this year's recipient of the University Health Network's (UHN) Global Impact Award, which recognizes physicians and scientists throughout history of the UHN for their creative discoveries in medical science that have had major impact worldwide. One of our thoracic surgeon's was the first surgeon in the world with his team to successfully perform a single and double lung transplant.
