Neurosurgery

Nationally recognized neurosurgeons at the Penn Comprehensive Neuroscience Center at Pennsylvania Hospital offer comprehensive surgical treatments for disorders of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nervous system. Patients receive the latest surgical care for stroke, aneurysms, tumors, blood clots, herniated disks in the neck and back, and tumors situated in the pituitary gland and at the base of the skull.

Pennsylvania Hospital is the area's only hospital to perform endoscopic pituitary tumor removal and is one of the few to perform deep brain stimulation for tremor due to Parkinson's disease and movement disorders. The hospital has the most experience in the region with pallidotomy, a surgical treatment that helps relieve rigidity, improve mobility and eliminate involuntary movements in patients with Parkinson's disease.

Inpatients are cared for in the Elliot Neurological Center of Pennsylvania Hospital, an area occupied by both neurologic and neurosurgical patients, as well as a Neurologic Intensive Care Unit

Patients benefit from the latest clinical research, which includes the use of non-invasive screening methods to detect aneurysms before they burst as well as the development of minimally invasive surgical techniques for brain surgery.
