Spring 2010 Graduate Class: The Wisdom of Contemplative Community

It is often easier to meditate in a group rather than alone. What is it about a group or community that supports our meditation practice? Is mindfulness an individual or collective experience? What is the role of compassion?

This advanced mindfulness course will explore the role of community as a support to mindfulness practice. Class participants will learn and practice an interactive mindfulness-based group process that allows us to “join with” other group members through shared experiences. This practice helps us to communicate our experience more directly, and undo the way that we become distant or alienated from others when we focus on our differences. The group will also explore how to manage one's own reactivity and impulse, how to accept differences in others, and how to cultivate compassion.
