Simple Rules to Relieve Constipation Naturally
1. Get adequate rest and relaxation. Try to
avoid nervous tension.
2. Eat a balanced diet including fruit and vegetables.
Be sure to include enough fiber (at least 20-25
grams per day) in your diet. Enjoy your meals
in a leisurely manner.
3. A convenient way to increase the fiber in
your diet is to eat high fiber snacks such as
FiberMed, Slimfast bars, etc. available at your
pharmacy or supermarket. Consume these snacks
along with one large glass of water or milk.
You can also try one teaspoon of unflavored Regulord
or unflavored Metamucil in one large glass of
juice daily.
4. Some moderate routine exercises can help
tone up your whole body and your “sluggish” bowel,
too.
5. Establish a regular time for going to the
bathroom.
6. When you feel the urge to move your bowels,
don’t put it off. Take all the time you
need for comfortable elimination.
7. Drink enough fluids. In addition to the other
liquids you normally consume, try to drink six
to eight 8 oz. glasses of water each day. If
your doctor has restricted your fluid intake
for another reason then consult with him/her
first.
8. Ask your doctor to discontinue or substitute,
if possible, any medicines you take that may
cause constipation.
9. If there is any sudden, unexplained change
in your bowel function, change in color or size
of your stools, or if constipation persists or
recurs frequently, consult your physician.
