Meet Dr. Barton

Todd D. Barton, M.D.,  is the Program Director of the internal medicine residency program, and a Professor of Clinical Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases. Todd was raised in St. Louis, where he was a high school varsity benchwarmer and a fervent Cardinals fan. He attended Swarthmore College, where he met his future wife, was president of the Movie Committee, called play-by-play for the school’s football and basketball teams, and majored in Chemistry and English. Todd then attended medical school at The University of Rochester, where he led an AIDS education task force during the first two years while attempting to generate passing grades (with mixed success). Between second and third years of medical school, Todd did a year out combining clinical research in infectious diseases with inpatient and outpatient clinical exposure at Penn, cementing his interest in caring for HIV-infected patients. After medical school graduation, he came to Penn for internship, residency, chief residency, infectious diseases fellowship, and faculty life. Todd does inpatient clinical service on a range of different infectious disease services.  He has won several teaching awards from medical students, residents, and fellows during his time on faculty at Penn. His wife, Maryl Kreider, is a pulmonary attending and Program Director of the pulmonary and critical care fellowship at Penn. Todd also has two children (college & grad school), a geriatric pet rabbit left behind by the college child, a number of mostly functional ‘vintage’ gaming systems, and a community theater career described by his family as his mid-life crisis which would surely go somewhere if only he could get a part.
