What is a chemical peel?
A chemical peel is a skin treatment that safely improves the look, feel and health of your skin. The process softens fine lines, rebuilds collagen, and lightens and brightens skin.

When you come for a chemical peel, the aesthetician, or skin care professional, will first carefully examine your skin. This very important step will help determine the right process for you.

All types of light to medium chemical peels are available at Penn’s Skin Care Program, so let your aesthetician know if you are interested in a specific type of chemical peel.

To begin the treatment, the aesthetician will use a technique called dermaplaning to remove eight to 10 layers of dead skin cells from your face.

Next, the peeling agent is gently applied with gauze. The acidic liquid stays on the skin for 30 seconds to two minutes, depending on the peel. Expect to feel a mild stinging or tingly sensation.

The aesthetician will clean out your pores and then apply a calming mask. Finally, a moisturizer and sun block are applied.

From start to finish, a chemical peel takes about 30 to 45 minutes. You can expect to leave looking and feeling great!

Who is a good candidate?
Almost anyone can benefit from a chemical peel. The treatment can dramatically improve the health of skin damaged by the sun and give individuals with acne or rosacea cleaner, brighter and calmer skin.

Risks
Talk with your aesthetician to be sure you understand the procedure and potential risks associated with chemical peels. If you don't understand something, ask!

After a chemical peel, some people experience redness or break outs. There can also be some peeling following the procedure.

Recovery and maintenance
For maximum benefit, the Skin Care Program recommends patients have one chemical peel a month for four to six months. After these initial treatments, a chemical peel once every three months is recommended to maintain the results.

Your aesthetician will talk with you about an individualized skin care regimen that will help to maintain and improve the health of your skin. Following their instructions and using the products they recommend will help you look your very best.
