Laser Skin Rejuvenation

Laser skin rejuvenation, one of the newest plastic surgery techniques available, improves skin color, texture and tone.

At Penn Plastic Surgery we use Laser360™, an advanced laser technology that combines three treatment modalities into one. This highly targeted treatment works by combining skin resurfacing and tightening techniques with intense pulsed light (IPL) to improve the overall appearance of the skin.

How Laser Skin Rejuvenation Works

During laser skin rejuvenation, your surgeon will use three technologies to provide complete skin rejuvenation:

  • Pixel Laser - Laser Creates thousand of microscopic perforations, stimulating new collagen to grow creates thousand of microscopic perforations, stimulating new collagen to grow
  • Alma Laser - Deep heating helps to firm up loose skin
  • IPL - Pulses of light even out your skin color and reduce tiny broken blood vessels

Your personalized combination of treatments is delivered over a period of 60 days and the result is tightened, toned and soft skin. Laser skin rejuvenation can also be used in combination with traditional surgical techniques, such as an eyelift or facelift, to improve specific areas of the face that may not be improved by surgery alone.

Who is a Good Candidate for Laser Skin Rejuvenation?

Healthy men and women who have realistic expectations about results are the best candidates for laser skin rejuvenation. Laser skin rejuvenation can improve minor facial flaws, such as:

  • Fine lines or wrinkles around or under the eyes, forehead or mouth
  • Aged or sun-damaged skin
  • Liver spots
  • Some precancerous skin lesions
  • Some forms of rosacea
  • Acne scarring
  • Enlarged oil glands on the nose

Under some circumstances, our plastic surgeons may recommend one of the more traditional approaches, such as a chemical peel or microdermabrasion, over laser skin rejuvenation.

Risks

Laser 360™ treatments are safe, comfortable and effective without injections, surgery or down time. Potential risks and complications can be avoided by carefully following all pre- and post- surgery instructions that will be provided for you.

Laser skin rejuvenation has a few specific risks, including:

  • Burns or other injuries from the laser's heat
  • Scars
  • Skin pigmentation changes
  • Herpes breakout, if you're susceptible to such infections

Preparing for Laser Skin Rejuvenation

The preparation for laser skin surgery is unique in comparison to the preparation for other surgeries.

An antibiotic regimen, a glycolic acid, and other special skin care instructions may be prescribed prior to laser skin rejuvenation. In the case of patients who occasionally have herpes or sun blisters, and the planned surgery includes the lip (perioral) area, an antiviral agent, such as Zovirax™, will also be prescribed to prevent a breakout.

Recovery

The Laser 360™ program requires little recovery time. Most patients return to their daily activities immediately after a treatment session. The pixel laser portion of the program typically results in pink, tender and swollen skin for several days. Cold packs and pain medication may help reduce the swelling and manage any discomfort. You will be instructed to stay out of the sun and to use a good sunblock.
