A chemical peel is a skin-resurfacing technique that consists of applying a chemical agent that rapidly exfoliates the skin. The process softens fine lines, rebuilds collagen, and lightens and brightens appearance by stimulating the growth of new skin. Chemical peels can safely treat a wide range of common skin conditions.
What to Expect
Penn Medicine's Skin Care Program offers all types of light to medium chemical peels. One of our aestheticians, or skin care professionals, will carefully examine your skin to determine the best type of chemical peel to meet your unique needs.
To begin the treatment, the aesthetician will use a technique called dermaplaning to remove 8 to 10 layers of skin cells from your face.
Next, the peeling agent is gently applied with gauze. An acidic liquid stays on the skin for 30 seconds to two minutes, depending on the peel. A mild stinging or tingly sensation is felt.
The aesthetician then cleans out your pores and applies a calming mask. Finally, a moisturizer and sun block are applied.
From start to finish, a chemical peel takes about 30 to 45 minutes. Our clients leave looking and feeling great!
Who is a Good Candidate for a Chemical Peel?
Almost anyone can benefit from a chemical peel. The treatment can dramatically improve the health of the following:
- Rough or dry skin
- Dull complexion
- Uneven skin texture
- Skin damaged by the sun
- Patients with acne or rosacea rough or dry skin
A chemical peel can cause various side effects, including redness, peeling and breakouts. Our Skin Care Program aesthetician will carefully review the procedure and potential risks with you.
Recovery and Maintenance
For maximum benefit, the Skin Care Program recommends one chemical peel a month for 4 to 6months. After these initial treatments, a chemical peel once every 3 months is recommended to maintain the results.
Our Skin Care Program aestheticians will advise you on an individualized skin care regimen that helps maintain and improve healthy skin. The result is a wonderful appearance of glowing, healthier and more youthful skin.
