BOTOX® and Other Neuromodulators

BOTOX®, a type of neuromodulator, is a simple, non-surgical approach to treating frown lines, deep wrinkles and fine lines found on the face. Neuromodulators, a type of botulinum A toxin, work by relaxing the muscles that cause wrinkles. Tiny injections are administered into selected areas and the result is smoother and younger looking skin.

At Penn Plastic Surgery we offer several different brands of neuromodulators, including Dysport®, as well as BOTOX®, generally considered the gold standard. Our wide selection of neuromodulators ensures the very best treatment approach is available to meet the unique needs of every client.

Who is a Good Candidate?

If you have deep lines between your eyes or on your forehead, BOTOX® injections may help smooth these wrinkles. A consultation with one of our surgeons will help determine the procedures and treatments that are best suited for you and your cosmetic goals.

Risks

Every type of procedure has risks but you can reduce the chances of complications by carefully following your surgeon's instructions.

There are a few specific risks associated with BOTOX® injections. They include:

  • Slight bruising
  • Temporary weakness in muscles near the treated area
  • Slight drooping of the eyebrow or upper eyelid that may last a few weeks

Recovery

You can expect to resume your normal daily activities right after the procedure. Be sure to avoid rubbing the treated area to reduce the chances that the BOTOX® will migrate to different areas causing temporary weakness in those areas.

The full effects of the treatment become evident in three to five days and typically last for four to six months.
