Joan Karnell Supportive Care Services

At Pennsylvania Hospital's Joan Karnell Supportive Care Services, supportive care is the essence of compassionate cancer care. Support comes in a variety of shapes and sizes to match your needs and concerns as you work to combat cancer.

A cancer diagnosis and its treatment can be overwhelming. Usually patients and family members have many questions and concerns about the disease and the treatment. The supportive care program helps patients and family members deal with the physical and emotional distress caused by the cancer diagnosis and treatment. The less distress patients have, the more energy they can direct toward recovery.

Comprehensive supportive care services require the expertise of an interdisciplinary team in order to adequately assess and treat the complex needs of cancer patients and their families. At the Joan Karnell Supportive Care Services, this team is organized under our Pain and Supportive Care Program, a palliative care service which includes professionals from medicine, nursing, social work, psychology, nutrition, shiatsu therapy, music therapy, art therapy, chaplaincy and other professional disciplines. These services are available to all patients, from the point of diagnosis.
