Risk Evaluation Program |
The Cancer
Risk Evaluation Program of Pennsylvania
Hospital is available at Pennsylvania
Hospital and at Penn Medicine Radnor
for women who are concerned about their
risk for breast or ovarian cancer.
The
program's physicians and genetic counselor
will help you understand the risk factors,
review your family history, medical history
and lifestyle risk factors. They will
discuss genetic testing, assist in your
decision about this option and outline
a plan for continued monitoring and cancer
prevention therapy to help protect your
health.
The program also provides information
for individuals who have been diagnosed
with cancer and want to know about the
role of genetics in their diagnosis.

Radiation
Oncology |
Working
in conjunction with an interdisciplinary
team specializing in cancer, radiation
oncologists at Pennsylvania Hospital provide
treatment with high energy x-rays, electrons
or radioactive isotopes. Our radiation
oncologists are full-time members of University
of Pennsylvania's Department
of Radiation Oncology, one of the largest
and most respected clinical services in
the region.
Treatment planning begins with
imaging done on a computerized tomographic
(CT) virtual simulator, which facilitates
the accurate delineation of the tumor and
normal tissue structures. Actual treatments
are delivered on the linear accelerator
best suited to treat a particular tumor
site.

Surgery |
Penn's
Division of Gynecologic Oncology at Pennsylvania
Hospital has the resources and capability
to treat the entire spectrum of gynecologic
cancers. An experienced gynecologic oncology
surgeon is part of the team. Gynecologic
cancers include cancers of the endometrium
or uterus, ovaries, cervix, vulva, vagina,
fallopian tubes and placenta. Although
gynecologic cancers are grouped together,
they vary in terms of symptoms, diagnosis
and treatment.
A gynecologic oncologist
is trained to care for all of types of
gynecologic cancers. When facing a diagnosis
of cancer, or the possibility, you want
the best team of experts. Penn gynecologic
oncologists will provide the information,
comfort and support to help you each step
of the way. For women with a gynecologic
condition, the decision to have surgery
can be difficult. A woman's busy life does
not leave much time to recover from a significant
surgical procedure.
Surgical recovery time
can now be shortened due to advances in
robotic technology. When applied to gynecologic
conditions, robotic surgery can be
used to treat cervical and uterine cancer,
uterine fibroids, endometriosis, uterine
prolapse and excessive bleeding.
