Gynecologic Oncology Program

As part of the gynecologic oncology at Penn Medicine, the Gynecologic Oncology Program at Abramson Cancer Center at Pennsylvania Hospital works together with our colleagues provide excellent care for women with gynecologic cancer.

These cancers represent the fourth most common type of cancer in women. Although gynecologic cancers are grouped together, they vary in terms of symptoms, diagnosis and treatment. When facing a diagnosis of cancer, or the possibility of cancer, you want the best team of experts—individuals who will provide the information, comfort and support you deserve to help you each step of the way.

Our knowledge about gynecologic cancer continues to grow and today, there are more encouraging treatment options for women with gynecologic cancer than ever before. We offer a team approach to patient care which includes other Penn specialists, education and support services for patients and families, nutrition services, cancer risk evaluation program and a dedicated research program. Treatment options include chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery.

All newly diagnosed cases are reviewed at a weekly conference by a multidisciplinary team comprised of:

  • gynecologic oncology surgeons
  • medical oncologists
  • radiation oncologists
  • pathologists
  • radiologists
  • oncology nurses

This team discusses the diagnosis and staging of the disease and treatment recommendations for every patient. This approach ensures patients receive the benefit of multiple opinions and team input.

Our surgeons use conservative surgical approaches to preserve a woman's reproductive organs and provide the best chance for cure whenever possible. Patients who are still in their reproductive years and desire children are referred to Penn Fertility Care to discuss fertility options.
