Message From the Administrator
I am pleased to present the newly revised newsletter for the Joan
Karnell Cancer Center at Pennsylvania Hospital. This newsletter began
two years ago as a resource for patients and families treated at the
Joan Karnell Cancer Center. It was a way to inform patients about
upcoming events, educational and support programs at the Center. It
is now expanding to meet the needs of patients and families who are
seeking more information about cancer prevention, early detection
and treatment.
I hope that this newsletter will inform you, inspire you and motivate
you. It is filled with information on cancer
treatment, our community outreach programs, development
and fundraising and upcoming events. It will still serve its primary
purpose – to provide
information about the Center’s supportive care and educational
programs.
Please stop by the newly revised Cancer Center space on the first
floor of the Farm Journal Building at Pennsylvania
Hospital. This new space was completed in June 2004. The staff and
administration of the Cancer Center have created a space that focuses
on wellness and healing, concepts integral to the patient and family
facing a cancer diagnosis.
This spaces offers a calm, supportive environment
for our patients, including offices to meet privately
with patients; a patient education center; a
quiet room for psychological counseling, music therapy and shiatsu
bodywork; a meeting room for support groups; and a demonstration kitchen
for our popular cooking classes.
Funding for this new space was made possible by generous gifts from
Cancer Center donors and advocates.
The primary fundraising event, Together We Can 2004, was held on
November 13, 2004 at the Ballroom at the Ben.
Special thanks to all those who donated to this
event and to those patients, families and friends who continue to
give. As our partners in these efforts, your support allows us to
further our research, develop new programs and expand our services – all
part of our goal to provide the best possible medical care and quality
of life for our patients. Together, we continue to make great strides
towards these goals.
Sincerely,
Mary Pat Lynch, CRNP, MSN, AOCN
