Celebrating Survivors, Celebrating Life
Each June, the Joan Karnell Cancer Center at Pennsylvania Hospital recognizes the tremendous courage and strength of its cancer survivors with a Survivors Day celebration.
This year's event, held on June 13 in the Elm Garden at Pennsylvania Hospital, brought together cancer survivors, their loved ones, and Cancer Center staff. Guests had a chance to reunite with their doctors, nurses and support staff, and visit with each other.
The day featured several speakers who inspired the audience with their words of encouragement. Joe Parrillo and Patti Cassimatis, both survivors, shared their cancer experiences. Kathy Spinelli, the mother of a teenager with cancer, provided a caregiver's perspective. In addition to the speakers, guests enjoyed the talents of soloist and Julliard student, Julia Mintzer, the daughter of David Mintzer, MD.
Other activities that added to the day's festivities included a children's magician, a charicaturist, and shiatsu massages. Special thanks to the Cancer Center staff and volunteers who helped make this day so memorable.
Another special recognition was given to Lynne Luttrell, a breast cancer survivor. Luttrell transformed a cart with her handpainted designs to be used as a tea cart for the Cancer Center. She presented the tea cart to Rose Horn, a Cancer Center volunteer, who provides tea and cookies in the Cancer Center waiting area to patients and their families.
