Ophthalmology Payment and Billing
Payment and co-pays are required at the time of visit. We are a hospital-based outpatient department at Scheie Eye Institute and Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. The Hospital may bill separately for the use of the facility. If you would like to know if you have a co-pay or deductible for the hospital services, please call your insurance company directly.

Important Insurance Information
Vision insurance pays only for a routine (well eye) examination or refraction. Your medical insurance pays for the eye examination by an ophthalmologist if you have an eye problem or disease. Please tell the scheduler whether you are coming for a routine examination or for a problem. If a problem is discovered during a routine examination, your doctor will determine whether you need immediate care by a subspecialist or an appointment with a subspecialist in the future.
Have your insurance cards on hand when you call and check your insurance plan to determine whether you need to obtain a referral from your primary care doctor.
