Postpartum Recovery at Pennsylvania Hospital

After your baby is born, you will transition to the postpartum maternity unit. Depending on your needs, personal preference, and your baby’s health, you may keep your baby in the room with you. Experienced nurses will take care of your baby in the nursery when you need to rest or shower. The nurses also will help you get started with feeding your baby and will teach you child-care basics, such as bathing and dressing your newborn. A lactation nurse specialist will consult with mothers who decide to breastfeed their baby.

Prior to discharge, your ob/gyn and nurses will provide you with postpartum personal care instructions. They will cover information such as perinea or cesarean section incision care, appropriate pain relief and when you should schedule your first postpartum ob/gyn visit.
