Childbirth Facilities at Pennsylvania Hospital

View a virtual tour of the rooms and amenities for labor and delivery patients at the Pennsylvania Hospital.

  • Pennsylvania Hospital's main entrance is located near the intersection of 8th and Spruce Streets in the Society Hill area of Philadelphia.

  • Valet Parking is available Monday through Friday, 5:30 am to 6 pm. If you arrive before or after these hours, you self-park or pull up to the hospital entrance and leave the car for approximately 20 minutes while the mother is checked-in.

  • Hospital doors lock at 9 pm. A security guard is stationed at the entrance to let you in.

  • In the rare event that the doors are locked and the guard has been pulled from his post, please press the intercom button located next to the door, and someone will arrive momentarily to open the door for you.

  • Take the elevator to the 3rd floor of the Preston Building.

  • Expectant mothers are first admitted to the Perinatal Evaluation and Testing Unit (PETU), located to your right when you step off the elevator.

  • On weekdays, you will be greeted at the registration desk. PETU registration is open Monday through Friday, 6 am to 10 pm.

  • When registration is not open on nights and weekends, please ring the doorbell for assistance.

  • Initial evaluation of labor takes place in the PETU, which is staffed by nurse midwives, residents, and labor and delivery nurses.

  • Friends and family are welcome in the labor and delivery waiting area.

  • Your family may use the phone in the waiting area to call your delivery room for updates during labor.

  • Welcome to labor and delivery!

  • All of the Labor/Deliver/Recovery (LDR) rooms are spacious, private, and home-like. You are welcome to bring music, a fitness ball, or other relaxation tools with you.

  • For mothers delivering via C-section, cesarean births take place in an operating room within the labor and delivery unit. After delivery, mothers go to a recovery area that is also in the unit.

  • For expectant mothers who desire a natural or low-intervention childbirth in a homelike setting, the Birthing Suite offers mothers access to the comforts of home while they receive expert care from our providers.

  • After about an hour, mother and baby move to a postpartum floor, located on 4, 5 and 6 Preston, where all the rooms are private.

  • You are welcome to use the lounges on the postpartum floors.

  • Lactation consultants conduct postpartum breastfeeding classes and visit with mothers and babies needing special assistance. Pennsylvania Hospital received the IBCLC Care Award in recognition of having board certified lactation consultants on staff and providing a lactation program that is available five to seven days a week.

  • Visitor passes and parking validation are available at the Welcome Desk.

  • For your security, your visitors must show their visitor passes to the unit clerk.

The Labor and Delivery Unit provides quality medical care in a relaxing modern setting. This unit features a maternity admissions area that offers mothers privacy and comfort for their early labor examination.

Our homelike labor and delivery rooms offer mothers the convenience of staying in the same room before and during birth and for a short period after delivery. Each room has a warm, comfortable atmosphere with a private bath, rocking chair and soft décor. All necessary medical equipment for mother and baby is stored out-of-sight until needed.

The Labor and Delivery Unit includes eight labor, delivery and recovery rooms, four high-risk labor rooms and a four-bed recovery area. The unit is fully equipped for cesarean births that are pre-scheduled or for emergent cesarean situations.

Pain Management

You have many options when it comes to managing the pain of labor. Our staff will help you make pain management choices that suit your individual needs. Physicians specializing in pain management (anesthesiologists) are on site 24 hours a day. Our staff is also trained to coach you through natural childbirth in which pain medication is not used.
