Beauty

Is beauty really just skin deep? Absolutely not. However, as we age the image in the mirror often shows lines, creases, sags and bags. But, to some they are signs of wisdom and experience and to others they are a constant nagging reminder that they aren't as young as they used to be. "What's important,"says Michelle Battistini, MD, director of Penn Health for Women, "is that women feel good about themselves inside and out. And each woman needs to define for herself, what that means."

For those who choose to do something to combat aging, there have never been more choices. From simply improving your basic skin care routine to plastic surgery, more and more women are choosing to enhance their appearance. Unfortunately, these increases also show that women have never had more pressure to look good and age well.

"Your skin is a reflection of your overall health. Wearing sunscreen, eating healthy, exercising regularly and not smoking add to your general health and make your hair and skin healthier," explains Valerie Weil, MD, internal medicine specialist with Penn Health for Women.

It starts at the top! Fifty-percent of women experience some hair loss as they age. And although heredity is the reason most women lose hair, it can be a symptom of another illness. In this issue, you'll learn more about normal skin and hair changes from specialists at Penn Medicine at Radnor. And we'll also provide you with information -- from the simple to the high-tech -- on what you can do to improve your appearance.
