New Technology Now Available for Sleep Apnea Patients
One potentially dangerous yet common sleep disorder is called “sleep apnea” which refers to interruptions in breathing during sleep. Often, the person suffering from the disorder is not aware they are having difficulty breathing during sleep until an episode is witnessed by another person.
When sleep is interrupted, the oxygen level in the blood falls. This can lead to daytime sleepiness, fatigue or other serious health conditions. The most effective treatment for sleep apnea is the use of the continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine to help the patient maintain an open airway during sleep. Other treatment options include oral appliances, weight loss, or surgery.
Penn offers five accredited sleep centers to diagnose and treat all types of sleep disorders. For more information or to make an appointment with a sleep specialist, visit Penn Sleep Center website or call 800-789-PENN.
