Top 10 Ways to Get the Most Out of Your Doctor's Visit

  1. When you're a new patient, bring your medical records.
  2. Know when you had your last medical tests and what the results were.
  3. Prioritize your concerns by making a list ahead of time.
  4. Expect an annual physical to include immunizations, health history, counseling and preventive screening tests such as Pap smears and mammograms.
  5. Know your health risks including your family's medical history.
  6. Fill out questionnaires from your doctor. They help in focusing on your personal history and problems.
  7. If you're coming in to discuss a specific problem, write down your symptoms and be as specific as possible.
  8. If you have sensitive or embarrassing issues to discuss, be as straight as you can and don't wait until the visit is over.
  9. Know the names and doses of any medications, herbal remedies and vitamins you're taking.
  10. Know how you will be informed of test results. Don't rely on "No news is good news."
