Treatment overview
Before deciding on treatment, talk with your doctor
about the types and severity of symptoms you're
having and whether or not you want to have children.
If you're not experiencing any symptoms, you
and your doctor may decide to "watch and
wait." Because fibroids are benign, there
is no harm in this conservative approach.
When symptoms are painful or debilitating however,
there is no need to suffer in silence. Depending
on the severity of the fibroid symptoms and whether
or not childbearing is finished, there are a variety
of safe and effective treatment options to consider.
Treatment for fibroids falls into two main categories:
- Medical therapy, also known as drug therapy,
that controls bleeding and shrinks the fibroids.
- Surgical therapy that removes the fibroids,
or at times, the entire uterus.
