I’ve Recently Been Diagnosed With Cervical
Cancer:
What Do I Do Next?
A diagnosis of cervical
cancer can be very overwhelming. Some people
become depressed, not knowing what step to
take next. To handle cervical cancer in the
best way possible, you should try to become
educated about the disease.
The more you know,
the better prepared you will be to discuss
your condition with your physician, to determine
a course of treatment, and to inform your family
and friends about what lies ahead. Some patients “assign” a
key support person who can attend doctor appointments
with them to take notes and help interpret
all of the information they are being given.
To learn about the treatment options, you will most likely be referred to a gynecologic oncology specialist – a physician who deals primarily with gynecologic cancers. After you are diagnosed, your doctor will perform additional tests to determine if your cancer has spread.
In addition, you will have a team of doctors and nurses working with you throughout your care to assist you with any surgical, medical, radiological, nutritional and support needs you may have. Your doctor will review all the information about your cancer. He or she will consider any other health conditions that may affect your treatment options and determine which therapy is best for you.
