Medical Nursing at HUP

Cardiac Care Unit

(Founders 8)

We specialize in Cardiac Intensive Care. Technologies available to this unit include Ventilators, Intra-aortic balloon pumps, coronary artery stents, continuous renal replacement (CRRT), multiple types of inotropic drips, P-VAD, Pulmonary catheters, pacemakers, and hypothermia protocol. This Cardiac Care Unit has 12 monitored patient care beds located on the eighth floor of the Founders building.

Our professional patient care team consists of RNs who may be accredited in CCRN, CNAs, nursing technician and secretary. Your typical patient care day could range from 8 to 12 hours. The ratio of patients to nurses is 2:1 unless patient requires 1:1 care.

The Department of Nursing Education, Innovation and Professional Development will partner with your clinical nurse manager, clinical nurse specialist, and preceptor to support and assist you through the completion of your orientation. The length of your orientation is based on your years of previous experience and can range from 6 weeks to 12 weeks.

Nurse Manager: Chris Ranjo, BSN, NE-BC, RN

Cardiac Intermediate Care Unit

(Founders 10 & 11)

We specialize in Heart Failure patients who receive the VAD and are waiting heart Transplant and/or destination therapy. Technologies include VAD Devices (LVAD, BIVAD, Total heart), arterial lines, and sheath pulls, and femoral stops. This Cardiac Intermediate Care Unit has 30 monitored patient care beds located on the tenth and eleventh floors of the Founders building.

Our professional patient care team consists of RNs who may be mastered prepared and may be in advanced degree programs, CNAs with 4 in RN programs, and a secretary that is in an RN program. They are certified in CCRN, PCCN, ACLS. Your typical patient care day could range from 4 to 12 hours. The ratio of patients to nurse is 3-5:1.

The Department of Nursing Education, Innovation and Professional Development will partner with your clinical nurse manager, clinical nurse specialist, and preceptor to support and assist you through the completion of your orientation. The length of your orientation is based on your years of previous experience and the critical care course is included in the first 9 weeks.

Nurse Manager: Leah Moran, MSN, RN

Clinical Translational Research Center

(Dulles 1)

The Clinical Translational Research Center (CTRC) located on Dulles 1, is an 8-bed inpatient, an 8 chair and 2 bed outpatient unit sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The CTRC also provides nursing care to two separate 5 bed sleep labs. The CTRC operates twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week and provides service to a huge variety of research subjects and hospital patients.

The CTRC staff consists of 13 full time registered nurses including the nurse manager and a CRNP. There are 3 level III nurses, 5 part time nurses, 1 nursing technician, 1 patient oriented secretary, 1 administrative secretary, a metabolic kitchen with 5 staff members including a bionutritionist, a core laboratory, a business manager, an informatics specialist, a statistician and research administrators.

Our research protocols are very diverse. We currently conduct over 120 active studies. The CTRC services over 1200 inpatients and over 6000 outpatients a year. A few of the studies conducted on the CTRC include: smell tests, HIV, sleep disorders, cholesterol, obesity, diabetes, various cancers, arthritis, hypertension, renal disease, short bowel syndrome, and new treatments for various diseases. Our patients and research subjects are adult and elderly populations. Children and adolescent subjects are usually seen at Children's Hospital next door.

Nurse Manager: Michael McNicholas, MSN, MBA, RN

General Medicine with Telemetry

(Silverstein 11)

We specialize in General Medicine/Telemetry. Patients on our unit have complex medical problems stemming from many diseases that require telemetry monitoring. This General Medicine with Telemetry Unit has 20 monitored patient care beds located on the eleventh floor of the Silverstein building.

Our professional patient care team consists of RNs who may be certified in Telemetry, CNAs, Support Associate, Student Nurse Externs, and Unit Secretaries. Your typical patient care day could range from 8 and 12 hours. The ratio of patients to nurse is 5:1.

The Department of Nursing Education, Innovation and Professional Development will partner with your clinical nurse manager, clinical nurse specialist, and preceptor to support and assist you through the completion of your orientation. The length of your orientation is based on your years of previous experience and includes a 3 day basic dysrhythmia course in the first 12 weeks.

Nurse Manager: Ruth Bell, BSN, RN

General Medicine with Telemetry

(Founders 14)

We specialize in General Medicine with Telemetry. Technologies available include Philips Intellivue Information Center and EASI 5-Lead telemetry system, MAC 5000 EKG machines, Philips HeartStart MRx biphasic defibrillator, Medley infusion pumps, mini-infusers, bladder scanners, and Doppler. This General Medicine with Telemetry has 39 monitored patient care beds located on the fourteenth floor of the Founders building.

Our professional patient care team consists of RNs who may be members of the Academy of Medical Surgical Nurses and are planning to pursue MedSurg certification, CNAs, secretaries, nursing support associate, and per diem nurses. Your typical patient care day could range from 8 to 12 hours. The ratio of patients to nurses is 5:1 during the day and evening and 6:1 during the night.

The Department of Nursing Education, Innovation and Professional Development will partner with your clinical nurse manager, clinical nurse specialist, and preceptor to support and assist you through the completion of your orientation. The length of your orientation is based on your years of previous experience and consists of 12 weeks.

Nurse Manager: Betty Ann Boczar, BSN, RN

Hematology/Oncology/BMT

(Rhoads 7)

We predominantly care for patients with hematologic malignancies including leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma and aplastic anemia. Technologies available include Medley pumps, Phillips Telemetry System, Bladder Scanner, and Patient Controlled Analgesic Pumps. This Hematology/Oncology/BMT Unit has 28 patient care beds located on the seventh floor of the Rhoads building.

Our professional patient care team consists of RNs who may be certified through the Oncology Nursing Society (OCN), CNAs, Support Associate, and Secretary. The unit is FACHT accredited for the Bone Marrow Transplant Program. Your typical patient care day ranges from 4, 8 or 12 hours. The ratio of patients to nurses is 4:3 in the evenings and daytime and nights, 6:4.

The length of your orientation is based on your years of previous experience and ranges from 8 to 12 weeks.

Nurse Manager: Teresa Kider, MSN, RN, OCN

Medicine/Telemetry Unit

(Founders 12)

We specialize in EPS/ROMI/Liver/Renal/HIV/COPD. Patients admitted to this unit predominately have cardiac and cardiac related issues, but are not limited to: coronary artery disease, unstable angina, myocardial infarctions, and conduction disturbances. Technologies include Telemetry, Navicare, and Online Discharge. This Medicine/Telemetry Unit has 39 monitored patient care beds located on the twelfth floor of the Founders building.

Our professional patient care team consists of RNs who may be members of Sigma Theta Tau, as well as local/national nursing associations, Nursing Assistants, Support Associate, and Secretaries. Your typical patient care day consists of 12 hours. The ratio of patients to nurse is 5-6:1.

The Department of Nursing Education, Innovation and Professional Development will partner with your clinical nurse manager, clinical nurse specialist, and preceptor to support and assist you through the completion of your orientation. The length of your orientation is based on your years of previous experience and includes a basic dysrhythmia class in the first 12 weeks.

Interim Nurse Manager: Betty Ann Boczar, BSN, RN

Medical Intensive Care Unit

(Founders 9)

We regularly care for patients with ARDS, sepsis, multi-system organ failure, and DKA/HHNK. Technologies include Hemodynamic monitoring, Swan Ganz Catheters, central lines, Arterial lines, Invasive and noninvasive ventilators, CRRT, administration of vasoactive agents, chemo, and all other medications. This Medical Intensive Care has 24 monitored patient care beds located on the ninth floor of the Founders building.

Our professional patient care team consists of RNs who may be certified in CCRN and ACLS, CNA, and unit clerks. Your typical patient care day ranges from 8 to 12 hours. The ratio of patients to nurse is 1-2:1 and occasionally 3:1.

The Department of Nursing Education, Innovation and Professional Development will partner with your clinical nurse manager, clinical nurse specialist, and preceptor to support and assist you through the completion of your orientation. The length of your orientation is based on your years of previous experience and includes a basic dysrhythmia and a critical care course ranges from 12 to 16 weeks.

Nurse Manager: Cheryl Maguire, MSN, RN, CCRN

Oncology Unit

(Rhoads 6)

We care for patients with hematologic and solid organ cancers. Technology available includes Bone Marrow Transplantation, Chemotherapy, and Radiation Therapy. This Oncology Unit has 28 patient care beds located on the sixth floor of the Rhoads building.

Our professional patient care team consists of RNs who may be certified in Oncology and Chemotherapy, CNAs, Student Nurse Externs, Support Associate, and Secretaries. Your typical patient care day ranges from 8 to 12 hours. The ratio of patients to nurse is 4:1.

The Department of Nursing Education, Innovation and Professional Development will partner with your clinical nurse manager, clinical nurse specialist, and preceptor to support and assist you through the completion of your orientation. The length of your orientation is based on your years of previous experience and includes courses in Chemotherapy and Bone Marrow Transplant within the first 12 weeks.

Nurse Manager: Kirsten McClintock, BSN, RN

Advanced Medicine Unit

(Rhoads 3)

We specialize in advanced medicine and medical oncology. Technologies include Medley pumps, telemetry, bladder scanners, pca's, and pcea's, and cyclers for peritoneal dialysis. This Advanced Medicine Unit has 16 patient care beds located on the third floor of the Rhoads building.

Our professional patient care team consists of RNs who may be certified in Med/ Surg, CNAs, nursing support associates, and secretaries. Your typical patient care day ranges from 8 to 12 hours. The ratio of patients to nurse is 4-5:1.

The Department of Nursing Education, Innovation and Professional Development will partner with your clinical nurse manager, clinical nurse specialist, and preceptor to support and assist you through the completion of your orientation. The length of your orientation is based on your years of previous experience and consists of 12 weeks.
