Access to the EMR is provided only with the proper credentialing, training and approval. Since the patient's electronic record contains Personal Health Information (PHI), access is restricted to the individuals who provide care or service to the patient. A minimum standard of training is needed for documentation and data upkeep to ensure patient safety and quality of care.
All Penn Medicine nursing students are required to attend computer training as part of the student nurse orientation program. It is the responsibility of the Course Coordinator and/or Clinical Instructor to contact Penn Medicine IS Training and Education Department to arrange for a computer training class for the Inpatient EMR. Students are not allowed to administer medications without having attended the Inpatient EMR training and having received a system password/log-on. Computer training could be up to 8 hours in length. If you have questions regarding computer training for instructors or students, email AthenaISEducation@uphs.upenn.edu.
Users of the EMR ( those who have used the system within last 11 months ) do not have to re-attend training. If a user has not accessed the EMR within the last three months, the user name may be inactive; the user can contact the Service Desk for a password reset. If the user has not accessed the EMR for three to 11 months, his/her nursing instructor/nursing student coordinator needs to place a request for account reactivation. If the user has not accessed the EMR for more than 11 months, the user's account may be inactive. An inactive account requires a user to re-attend training.
For current health system employees who also serve as instructors, you will have two logins:
- In your role as a Penn Medicine Nurse, you will use your network ID.
- In your role as a clinical instructor, you will be provided with a separate and different login.
Please do not use your Penn Medicine network login while you are performing the duties of a clinical instructor
